Project:
Design and install an audio-visual solution to complement the beautiful Chapel surroundings and to retain the aura of a place of worship
Background:
Gordonstoun is a co-educational international boarding school in the north-east of Scotland and the School's 600 students assemble every morning in St. Christopher Chapel. St. Christopher already had a sound system in place but required an audio-visual solution for the hosting of the Round Square Conference - a prestigious annual international meeting of more than 50 schools from around the world that share Gordonstoun's commitment to personal development, service and responsibility.
Design Considerations:
The Chapel has side aisles, so it was essential that those sitting in the wings were also able to see the image on the main screen at the front of the altar. The wall behind the altar is curved, which presented a further technical challenge when it came to installing the main screen. In addition, the School required an audio-visual system that could be operated either by the speaker at the altar or by someone in a booth at the back of the building.
Scotia Solution:
Scotia UK installed a four metre square projection screen above the altar and constructed specially designed brackets to fix it to the curved wall. Two 50-inch plasma screens were installed in the aisles. Scotia UK used switching equipment to connect the existing sound system into the new audio-visual system. Eight CAT 5 signal distributors were used to take output from video, laptops, PCs or cameras and convert them to a format that can be displayed on the screens. The signals are controlled through an easy-tooperate 16-button ProCon control plate.
Result:
The equipment worked flawlessly at the conference, which was a big success, and the high quality of the projection facilities was commented on by the participating schools. St Christopher Chapel is now an extremely flexible space that can be used for prayer or for presentations. The Chapel is used on a daily basis and the easy-to-use AV system is operated by students, giving them valuable hands-on technical experience.
