Project:
To upgrade St Mungo’s Church sound system, eliminating distortions and creating a sound space that is clear and concise for the congregation.
Background:
St Mungo’s Church is part of The Church of Scotland and is situated in the town centre of Cumbernauld. Not only does the church host many religious services throughout the year, but it is also a major hub of the community hosting numerous local events and volunteering activities. The church was suffering from poor sound quality, mainly due to its antiquated equipments inability to cope with inherent acoustics of the building.
Design Considerations:
Scotia took the building’s unique architectural configuration into consideration before planning precisely, with our acoustician, where the sound equipment was to be installed, primarily to overcome the heavy distortions that were a consequence of the building layout.
Scotia Solution:
Bose was specified as the highest possible quality solution within budget for this installation. Due to the truly unique nature of the building, the foremost challenge to overcome was the placement of the speakers to ensure that the congregation would be able to comprehend clearly and comfortably. We liaised closely with the clergy as to their positioning and the general consensus was that they would have to be arranged in an outward-facing circle to accomodate as many as possible.
The Bass Unit and technical hub were situated under the main lectern, creating a rooted and centralised focal-point for the sound in the centre of the church.
We installed Bose Panaray speakers to not only give distance for the sound, but to give height an often overlooked sound element and therefore more space and fluidity of sound.
Result:
St Mungo’s Church is now equipped with a highly sophisticated and seamless high-definition sound system. The microphones allow the speaker to project their voice with perfect enunciation, and the speakers consistently provide clarity and precision for the comfort of every member of the congregation.
